Mensen aan het werk teken ik graag. Het is spannend en informatief. Het vergt echter een bepaalde aanpak, want werken betekent bewegen. Je weet nooit of waar je begint je ook eindigt.

I love sketching people at work. It is exciting and informative. However it demands a special approach, because working means moving. You never know that where you start is also where you finish your sketch.

The human body has always fascinated me. Especially when the body is in motion. In the beginning of my career as an artist I studied Edward Muybridge’s Human Figure in Motion. A quick way to portray movement in a standard way I learned while working for Beeldleveranciers.

Hoe je mensen aan het werk kan tekenen hangt van veel dingen af. Als ik de iemker aan het werk teken heb ik zelf een iemkerpak aan en als het regent probeer ik vanachter een raam te schetsen. Soms is er weinig ruimte om in te bewegen en soms lukt het gewoon niet. Het makkelijkste is als de zon schijnt en je kan zitten waar je wil.
How you sketch people at work depends on different things. If I sketch the beekeeper at work do I also don a beekeeper’s suit. When it rains I try to get a good view from the window. Sometimes there is little space to move around in and in some cases it just doesn’t work out. Ideal is the situation when the weather is nice and there is room to sit anywhere.

In de meeste gevallen vinden mensen het leuk als je ze tekent bij het werk. Ze zijn trots op wat ze doen en dat mag gezien worden. Er was een tijd dat de mannen van Achill niet eens wilden dat je als vrouw er bij was als ze werkten. Maar dat is gelukkig verleden.

Most of the time people like it when they are sketched while at work. They are proud of their skills and that can be seen. Once upon a time the men of Achill didn’t want a woman around while at work. But that has changed.
